So the med students are supposed to practice with these new toys (which is what I call them even though they're completely real and legit....but let's face it, to my husband they're new toys to play with!).
Lately I've been feeling like I live at the doctor's office, with him taking my vitals and such. Sure it's good practice for him and I'm happy to help, but I have to admit, all the doctor's office stuff makes me nervous. Some people are nervous about going to the dentist. Not me! Bring on the dentist! Some people are nervous about going to the doctor. I am some people. But something tells me that over the next couple of years, I will become a lot more comfortable with all this stuff, especially with all the doctoring going on at home! It'll actually be nice in the future...we'll most likely save several visits to the doctor with my husband's chosen profession. I'm all about that!
In the meantime, I'll just get accustomed to knowing my daily blood pressure, having a blinding light shine through my pupils, and having him look into my ears (so romantic!). It'll probably make going to the doctor's from now on feel a little like home.

Ha ha ha! Oh my goodness gracious, it only gets more intense. Mr.B had to do standardized patients every month so he would run through the physicals on me every day for two weeks before he had the quiz :) You get used to it though and 3rd year you kind of miss it! The only part I don't miss is the blinding light :) xoxo
Haha I totally remember feeling like this too last year! Nicholas would always practice on me a few times before being graded on standardized patients. The most exciting was the first few times he decided to try out the blinding light in my eyes...oh the joys of being a med student's wife!
Can definitely relate there! The stethoscope is fine, but my arms starting going a little numb after a few too many goes with the cuff. I have yet to learn the joys of the pen light, sounds like it's going to be interesting. :)
J has bought all of his things periodically as he needed them so I never saw the but fat $1,000 charge, but I'm sure it adds up to that. But like you said, for what the education is costing you might as well get the good toys- it's not like saving $100.00 will make a difference at all!!!
He just got his otoscope (eye/ear thing) and I only know the name because I Googled it. Anyway- he didn't get the memo about how far to put it in the ear and I was his first patient. Wow. It hurt. And I had mild echoing for a few days. He felt really bad, but I take pride in knowing that because he injured me he will be very, very careful with his future patients.
I was totally wishing this last week that we had a stethoscope so Thomas could listen for fluid in my lungs and a hearbeat in my belly. Maybe we'll have to visit soon. :D
$1000?! My hubby bought those too and really regretted it because he never uses them. You can practice at the hospital, he says. New students get suckered into buying so much useless crap. (Although I keep telling myself that when I go to med school at least I will have hand-me-downs)
Wow! All of this will be so good to know for next year! My fiancé is currently in the process of sending out secondaries and scheduling interviews. Looks like I have a lot to look forward to. (:
I have been reading your blog and you sound so much like me, It gets better I think. I hope.. LOL.. Hang in there. I could use that fast forward button sometimes, just for use in emergencies. Maybe you are right after all, get rid of the button, half my life will be done.. like that movie click..
